IPP Printer setting Configure Internet Port: Security Options

When adding an IPP Printer, you can configure the port to specify explicit credentials to connect and print to that printer. Does anyone know where those credentials are stored on Windows 7 and 10? I looked at the credentials manager and couldn't find them.

Problem with multiple instances of shared printers being installed on client computers when the spooler service is started

Hello,

We have Windows Server 2012 and clients using Windows 8.  We've been having some printer problems for awhile now that I haven't been able to figure out for the life of me.  The main problem is the fact that printers are installed on computers automatically once the drivers are installed.  The side-effect of multiple instances of each printer showing up is very annoying but I suspect fixing the initial problem will resolve this secondary one.

Here is the rundown:

  • We add the shared printers on logon to the clients using the GPO thus installing the drivers locally.
  • Whenever the spooler on the client is restarted with the drivers installed, all of theshared printers that were previously installed get duplicated 5 more times (for a total of 6 instances of each shared printer) on the "Devices and Printers" page.  This happensall the time.
  • Removing them only fixes the issue temporarily, as soon as the spooler or computer is restarted, it seems these shared printers are somehow found on the network and the duplicates return.
  • Two of these printers are located on different clients, installed locally and shared while the other three are all installed on a server and shared through it.  The issue is the same on all of them.
  • Cleaning the spooler completely (registry and files from C:\system32\spool) fixes the issue temporarily as well since, as soon as the drivers are reinstalled, the issue occurs again.

I've tried many things (disabling the GPO, editing the GPO, printer shares, registry, etc.) and searched tirelessly online for a cause and solution but I'm stumped.  Does anybody have any idea what might be causing this problem and how to resolve it?

Thanks for your time!

Update #1: I just tried adding the NoNetCrawling option in the registry found in this article -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320138/en-us

I couldn't find the same for Windows 8 unfortunately.  I also tried disabling network discovery and all other sharing options to no avail.

Update #2: I tried isolating the computer to a different subnet and restarting the spooler and, sure enough, the issue didn't occur.  This proves that the issue is network share related.  Also, as soon as I change the IP back to the regular domain subnet one, the multiple printer instances re-appeared again.

Update #3: I just tried doing the same thing but on the server where the printers are installed and shared and, sure enough, despite being in a different subnet, the issue occurred.  This leads me to believe there is a setting on this server at fault. Question is, which one?

Export all shared printers "Print Preferences" from server.

Hello, hope you are well.

The company I work for wants to make sure all colour printers on the estate are defaulted to print black and white instead of colour to reduce unnecessary costs.

I have been asked if I could investigate all the printers to make sure that they are set to print default black and white for all users.

The company has 100s of printers so don't like the idea of doing this manually.

I am wondering if there is at least a way to export all the print device information from each print server that would detail what the printer preferences are set to. I don't expect to be a lot so changing any to black and white should not be a big job to do manually, but if the information gathering could be automated then that would be a big chuck of the work.

I have found a number of printer information export PowerShell scripts which are great but they don't display the printer preferences for each device. I suspect there is not a Microsoft way as this information is set within the properties of the driver.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Print Preview Does Not Match with Print Result

Hi all expert,

Currently I have one Server 2008 R2 used for remote desktop server for my Korean users to access Axapta3.0

This server has no problem for print any Sales Order, Purchase Order from Axapta3.0 client in Korean language.

We intend to migrate this server to Server 2016, but there has printing problem in this server.

For preview it works perfectly, but print result it mix Korean with some garble characters.

This result even happened if print on pdf soft copy, this make me suspect is nothing to do in printer drivers.

Below is the steps I have been done.

1. Running Windows update patch all the latest patches.

2. Set Non-Unicode Program running in Korean (without doing this can't even preview in proper).

3. Install vendor driver and using Remote Easy Print driver; result same.

4. Install Adobe Reader Korean version.

What else I can done to solve this.

Appreciate any input from all the experts.

Thanks.

Regards,

Kenny

What's the difference between printbrm.exe and PrintUIEntry

$

As we know, we can save something of printers by

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /n M126 /Ss /a "D:\1.dat"

or

printbrm.exe /b /f D:\

.

Of course, I know that the one is calling an exe with arg from cmd, the other is that a process loadlibrary the dll and call the function.

I don't know what's the difference between the files which they save. such as D:\1.dat between D:\1.printerExport.

In fact, I know little about printers.

Using Microsoft XPS Document writer as default printer for all clinets

Hi

Our Infrastructure contain 300 windows 8.1 and 4 domain controllers and print servers, relaying on Group policy to deploy 50 printers to different organizational units

all users are using Mandatory user profile

My problem is printers are showing by 50:50 each time user logs on to the computers ! i have posted my issue in more than three different places with no solution , i believe the issue is related to mandatory profile and can not be fixed .

since the printers are essential for our infrastructure i was thinking about redirecting XPS document writer to actual physical printers that hosted on our print server By modifying Ports tab on xps document writer printer object , actually i have done that but when i press a test page it will print nearly 300 pages with unknown Encoding characters! anybody done this or have the same issue ?

the reason for my idea is xps object is always there ,it does not require GPO and it is fully functioning with Mandatory profiles

my idea looks like crazy but trust me i don't have other options

Kind Regards

installing 32 bit driver on 64bit giving access Denied

$

window Server2016, several printers. I can log in to a 64bit pc(windows 10) and install or connect to all the printers, no problems

I have 2 printers which 32bit and 64bit drivers were installed (via share and additional drivers I could see both X86 and 64)

but if I login with domain admin to a 32bit pc (XP Sp3) (I haven't try win 7 32) when try to connect to any of those printers I get prompt with username and password (when try to open any of them I get access Denied)?

I try using domain\administrator and password and it says no good.

this is on both printers with x86 and without x86 drivers.

I think the drivers may have been installed before.

A. where can I see or change the denied access?

B. I am trying to use the method to log into 32 bit OS and install the 32bit drivers for other ones.

This is the domain controller that was upgraded from 2003SBS to 2012 to then 2016

thanks

Microsoft-Windows-PrintServer/Admin and /Operational Logs are not generating new events

From some months ago, the following Printer Service logs are not generating any new event. The logs affected are:

  • Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Operational
  • Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Admin
  • Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Debug (this one expecially is not working at all)

I have searched through the Registry and I found these two keys empty (no dll specified as EventMessageFile or ProviderGuid gived):

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Admin
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Operational

the last events i could read from Admin and Operation event logs, reports the same kind of message:

The description for Event ID 307 from source Microsoft-Windows-PrintService cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

What kind of problem could be? Is it possible some MS updates cause this problem? The last two updates before that happened areKB4074587 and KB4054998.

Thanks for the help you could give.

Windows Server Print Management. Show only the printers a specific User is authorized to use.

$

We have a network with about 500 printers. We want to transition to Print Management. The team wants the following access behavior:

1) Add printers to the print manager

2) Set the authorized groups for the given printer

3) Choose the option to List the printer in the directory, this allows the user to see all available printers when adding a printer. It should not be necessary to "Promote the printer to Group Policy"

Problem:

When a User goes to "Add a Printer", they can see every printer in the Directory, whether they are authorized to use it or not. It does require them to enter a password, but this is not the desired behavior.

We don't want users having to navigate through 500 printers to add one or two, relevant to their department or location.

Please advise

Note: If you're going to tell me to use GP Management to accomplish this, then please provide an example. I believe the procedure for this simply adds relevant printers automatically, and doest show a list of available authorized printers

Deploying a new Server 2012 print server

Hi,

I have been tasked with deploying a new Server 2012 print server. This will be my first one as we had software that would take care of this for us (Printer Logic). I'm not sure why we went this direction in the first place but we did for some reason. We are moving away from this now.

What does Microsoft recommend as far as best practice when setup a print server? Should I use a separate drive or should I just use the C: drive to install all the drivers? My question is do I need 2 drives (one OS & another for printers)?

Print spooler service hung starting after July 2018 Windows updates on 2008 R2 servers only.

Restarting the server temporarily resolves issue. Spooler service hangs approx once a day only impacting 2008 R2 servers not 2012 R2 or 2008.

Anyone run into this issue after this months (July 2018) Windows updates? Thanks in advance!

Migrate windows 2003 print server to 2016 print server

$

Hi,

We are trying to migrate the current windows 2003 print server in cluster to windows 2016 r2 high availability.  My ask here is,

1. Is it possible to migrate print service role from 2003 to 2016 directly or should I migrate from 2003 to 2012 and then migrate to 2016?

2. Is there any documentation to migrate print server cluster from 2003 to 2012 or 2016?

3. Is there possibility of using follow me print solution (of HP or canon) to integrate with print server?

Thanks

Someone has a solution/prompt?

Changing drivers - What's the timing/procedure for clients getting the new driver?

$
0
0

We run a few 2012 R2 print servers and a few hundred printer shares. We've got everything finely tuned: GPOs to allow non-admins to install printers, GPOs to install printers, shared/isolated & packaged type 3 drivers when not using a type 4, and so on. Everything hums along as normally as one could expect from a Windows print environment.

The hang-up I have is the timing of clients getting updated printer drivers. (New printer assumes the identity of an old printer, existing printer needs different driver for certain functionality, etc.) I recall reading MS documentation saying that client's installed instances of printers are supposed to pick up on the change on the next print job, but that rarely -- if ever -- happens. Even removing a printer, rebooting, and letting group policy reinstall the printer on next login still uses the previous driver for the printer share. Eventually after just uninstalling & reinstalling & rebooting for some length of time, the client will have the printer installed with the updated driver. This is pretty much the story on Win7, Win8.1, and any version of Win10 from the reports I've gotten from my user support team.

Am I expecting the wrong thing to happen? Should I be deleting/recreating printer shares instead of only changing the driver on an existing one? Is there some client-side command or procedure to make it clear whatever is caching the old driver and force it to grab the one from the server anew?

Any guidance or anecdotes from the field or links to documentation on this would be a great help, because "reinstall it 'til it works" isn't cutting it.

Thanks in advance!
