Problems mapping printers on Windows Server 2008 R2 and later versions

Hey.

I am expieriencing some strange behaviour with printer mapping on our 2008 R2 Terminal Servers.

We are using a .net application as “logon script” which reads printer names from active directory and uses the Windows API call "AddPrinterConnection" of winspool.drv to add the Printer.

Everything is running fine on normal desktop clients but it fails on terminal servers most of the time.

Errors are "Printer not found" and sometimes "Bad Environment".

Using VBScript and “AddWindowsPrinterConnection” of “WScript.Network” produces the same results.

If I rerun the application everything works fine and all printers are mapped without any problems.

Anyone around who faced similar problems?

Greetings

David Schreiner

Network shared printer shows "Offline" after wide area network connection has been restored

Good day,
We have multiple locations that connect to our data center to run their applications. We have a two Windows Print servers at the datacenter (1 Windows 2003 R2 and 1 Windows 2008) with the remote printers installed and shared as Tcpip printers.
My question/problem is when a WAN link goes down, the printer status (on the Windows Printer Server) changes to Offline. When the WAN link is restored, we have to restart the Print Spooler Service (on both the W2k3 and W2K8) on the server for the printers to work again. Any ideas how to make the printers come back online when the WAN link is restored?

Thanks,
Steve

Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver printer driver is not installed on this computer

We are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 Bit virtual desktops (using VMware View 6.1) and connecting users to a Type 4 Xerox printer driver/queue being hosted off of a Windows 2012 R2 Server. The driver on the server is listed as "Xerox WorkCentre 7970 V4 PCL6" and when the Windows 7 user connects to it the driver appears as "Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver". Within the Win7 client's "Print Management" it appears as version 6.3.9600.17415

The Printer works fine during their Windows session, they log out and when they log back in the print queue is still there but when you right click and go to "printer properties" it throws the following error

"The 'Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver' printer driver is not installed on this computer. Some printer properties will not be accessible unless you install the printer driver. Do you want to install the driver now?"

Removing the queue then re-adding it fixes the issue for the Windows session you are in.

Side note: We are using VMware's Persona Management to save user's profile data across logoffs since the virtual desktops are non-persistent. I've only been able to reproduce this in Windows 7 using a virtual desktop, I can't reproduce it on my physical Windows 7 box.

We are getting around this by using group policy and a vbs script to remove the queue on logoff then another script to re-add it on logon but that's just a band-aid.

Also, a Type 3 driver works fine across logoffs but we need the Type 4 driver in this instance.

JobID in PrintService Operational log

Hi

Viewing the PrintService Operational log I have noticed that the document ID or JobId used gets to a certain number and then starts over. What I can't figure out is why that number is different on each server look at.
On one server the document id / JobId gets to 639 and the it starts over at 1.
On another server the document id / JobId run all the way to 22727 before it starts over at 1.

Why this difference and is there any way to control it?

Scanning to a shared folder with windows 8

I was trying to set up a template to scan to a folder on a windows 8 computer from a Toshiba e205L MFP. I created a local account and gave it permission to write to the shared folder. The computer is joined to a domain. When I scan to the folder I get a 2D31 error. Which is an unable to create file error. However, it does create a pdf in the folder, but the file has no data, 0kb in size. I'm pretty comfortable working with domains and have set up plenty of scan to folder templates. Is there some kind of security in windows 8 that I'm missing? I can use my laptop, open up a unc path; \\ipaddress\scans and I was able to, after passing the same credentials I'm using from the copier, open a pdf and save it as a different filename into the same folder. I have also set the template to use the domain account the user was logged in as and still had the same issue(account was a local admin). Anybody run into this? I have windows 8.1 Pro on my laptop, it's joined to a domain and I created a folder on my laptop, shared it out, created a local account, gave permissions for that account to the shared folder. Then, I setup a template to scan to that folder just the same way I set it up for this customer and it works without a hitch. I read about an issue with encryption in windows 8 being 128 bit, but I never even had that issue using my laptop. Is there something I'm missing?

I saw that a few older copiers(devices) may not support 128 bit encryption that Windows 8 uses and I noticed that the copier I was testing with did have newer firmware, so I upgraded the estudio 205l firmware and still received errors, although the code was different, it was 2d62 which I later found was a failure to connect to network destination, check the path. I actually, had asked the local I.T. guy who set the windows 8 machines up on the network to take a look and asked him if there was any security setup that I might not be aware of. He said there was nothing special setup. However, I didn't check the windows 8 computer to make sure the folder I created was still there, so I will go back and re-check that. Any other ideas?

Server 2012 Fax Server Status Monitor (Where did it go?)

$

We recently decommissioned a 2003 fax server, moving to 2012 (R1). Everything is set up, fax printer is shared and it's working.

One thing we've noticed and aren't crazy about is that the status monitor doesn't display the network users' activity (attached screen shot). It only shows the progress of faxes being sent from the server console. For example, if user A sends a fax from her PC through the server it doesn't show up on the server's monitor. On the 2003 server it did and it was easier to track down issues. If a fax is hung up for whatever reason it was nice to see it all happening and where it was getting hung up.

I know there are log files but is there a way to get the status window to display everyone's sent faxes?

How can I fix this printer error with Samsung SCX-4300 and SCX-4521f on Windows Server 2008 R2?

$

I have two printers installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit):

1. Samsung SCX-4521f
2. Samsung SCX-4300

There are two computers (Windows 7 Professional, 32-Bit) connected to this server that utilise these shared printers.

The drivers installed are as follows:

  1. SCX-4x21_Win7_Print.exe (Win 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/Win 7    3.04.96:03    Print Driver    11 Dec, 2009    12.37    MULTI LANGUAGE)
  2. SCX-4300_Print.exe (Win 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/Win 7(32,64bit) 3.04.95:07 Print Driver Jan 19, 2011 53.07 MULTI LANGUAGE)
After printing documents for some time (within a 24 period) the printers no longer respond to print requests.

On the server opening "Control Panel\Hardware\Devices and Printers" shows the two printers with yellow exclamation marks.

The "SCX-4x21" printer shows the "Status" as "Needs troubleshooting" and "Printer: Error".

The "SCX-4300" printer shows the "Status" as "Needs troubleshooting".

Neither will print a test page.

Searching for new drivers automatically returns saying: "The best driver software for your device is already installed".

The error persists and nothing will print.

When double-clicking on the "SCX-4x21" printer (or going to "Control Panel\Hardware\Devices and Printers\Samsung SCX-4x21 Series") you see the following:
"Printer: Error" and "N document(s) in queue".

Clicking on either of these brings up the print queue and shows a document with the status of "Error - Printing".

As each job with an error is cancelled the next one attempts to print and also displays an error like the last.

Once all the jobs are cleared the printer information says "Printer: Ready".

Sending a "Print Test Page" sends the printer into an error state saying "Printer: Error".

With the "SCX-4300", sending a "Print Test Page" displays a bubble saying: "Toner Empty: Replace Toner".

However, I can't see any specific error messages.

How do I find out what exactly "Needs troubleshooting"?

Please can anyone advise further?

Windows Server 2008: "Access denied" when adding a tcp/ip printer

I have just installed Windows 2008 server, and am attempting to add my network printers.  When I specify the IP address of the printers it searches for a few seconds, and then gives an "Access denied" message.

I can ping the printers from the server, and can ping the server from elsewhere on the local network.  The server and the printers are on the same subnet.

I can create a folder in the System32/Spool/Printers directory.

I am logged in as Administrator.

There seem to be no error messages in the event log.

There have been some discussions about User Access Control.   However, this does not seem to apply as I am the Administrator.

Net Use Command and Printing to text files

I have a strange situation concerning a server which I use for remote access to our office.

We have an old DOS program on a Windows 2003 server. We run it on this server because 1) it works and 2) the server can handled multiple people connecting from home.

First Attempt:

I setup the 2003 server with a generic printer and the print to file port. This didn't work and it never asked me for a file name or location. I checked My Documents and found nothing with the *.prn file.

Second Attempt:

I setup the 2003 server with a generic printer and set it to LPT1 with the option to print to file. I shared the printer and I used the command NET USE LPT2 \\servername\printershare /persistent:yes  However this didn't work

Third Attempt:

I setup the 2003 server with a generic printer and set it to LPT1 with NO option to print to file. I shared the printer and I used the command NET USE LPT2 \\servername\printershare /persistent:yes  When I tested it I got an error and the print job got stuck in the queue.

Fourth Attempt

I setup the 2003 server with CutePDF and used their printer plugin for the printer. This didn't work.

Fifth Attempt

I setup the 2003 server with a laser printer on the network. I shared it and I used the command NET USE LPT2 \\servername\printershare /persistent:yes  When I printed I got the print job stuck in the queue again.

So it seems that the problem lies with the print job getting stuck in the queue. I can't figure out why because I use the NET USE command on all my workstations to make the printer work inside the office. However with this remote access server I can't get it to function correctly.

Is there a way to force the print jobs to go to a specific location and give it a specific file name? I would like a command line option because that is what seems to work with this old DOS program.

Thanks!

Push default printer settings from server - setprinter.exe ?

Hi,

I need to push out some new default printer settings (mono and duplex) for 300 printers across about 12 x 2003/2008 print servers.  All of these devices are already mapped by around 2500 WinXP/7 users, so reconnecting the devices for everybody is not an option, nor is redeploying via GPO.  I've read the following thread, which appears to explain what I need to do:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverprint/thread/a0a9bb3f-db24-417d-9905-c310d068d3c6/

Firstly, I need the latest version of setprinter.exe, as the one I've got is date stamped April 2003, which I assume is the one that fails to work with devmode 9.  Does anybody know where I can get this from?

Secondly, I think it says that the clients will periodically update themselves with the server's default settings.  This is perfect, if correct.  However, would anybody please be able to explain when these periodic updates take place?

Many thanks in advance !

Andy

Deploying via Print Management with GPO

$

I have two terminal servers that is serving clients in 3 locations.  Each location has a ton of printers, but the clients using the terminal servers want things simple and they ONLY want to see the printers that actually use.  The curve-ball is, they want duplex printing turned on, and redirection does not allow printing preference to carry over.

So, here is what I've done:

~ Created basic GPO "per user" with logon script for pushprinterconnections.exe
~ Set the default print settings from the print server, i.e. dupliex printing
~ Deployed Printers per user via print management console on the print server

Woo-hoo it worked.....wait for it...nope.  Well it did, but my customer is a bit picky.

This has accomplished allowing each user to only see printers they need, and set up duplex by default.  Here is the last caveat.  5 groups of users total, all needing a specific DEFAULT printer.

How do I set that default printer?  If I log onto the client computer, RDP to the terminal server and change the default printer there, will it stick?  I'm not sure since they are deployed via print management on a per user basis with a logon script.

W2008 Server with TS not printing from TS client to shared printer

I have a 2008 Server with TS running remote apps.  I have a TS client on XP, SP3, 32-bit  that is trying to print from a remote app to a shared printer on another XP, SP3, 32-bit client.  When clicking on print, all apears to work, but nothing is printed.  I have run KB 302361 on both clients, rebooted, and still having the same problem.  When printing from local apps on the XP pc, print jobs work fine to shared printer.  In the server event log, I see Event ID 6161 with the following:

"The document Intuit, owned by ksherick, failed to print on printer HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL6 on FCFINANCIAL (redirected 5). Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.

Data type: RAW. Size of the spool file in bytes: 547089. Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 6. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\SERVER. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 5. Access is denied."

Not sure of next step.

RDS 2012 Printing problem

Hi,

I got some weird printing issues in our RDS 2012 R2 enviroment. We have a fram with four servers and it uses User profile disks.

Sometimes our users dont get some or any printers mapped to their session, this can be fixed by running a gpupdate /force and log off and in again. Sometimes all printers are mapped but the default printer arent set correctly, it may miss the green checkbox marking it as default printer(But if you right click i shows as default printer) or the default printer is not set at all. This can also be solved by gpupdate and log off and in.

We set printers with GPO, we have one that maps the printers, we use the update action and item level targeting. The default printer is set by another policy that also uses update and item level targeting, but only sets a printer to the default printer.

We have look at and installed alot of updates/hotfixes from microsoft but they do not seem to help.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2933664
http://blogs.technet.com/b/chad/archive/2015/01/21/current-windows-server-2012-r2-amp-windows-8-8-1-update-rollups.aspx

We have installed all recommended updates from Microsofts WSUS.

If i run policy result i can see that the printing policy have been applied be we also get this error "Result: Failure (Error Code: 0x80070bc4)". I have not been able to find any usefull information about the error code online.

I have not been able to find any other errors or logs that can point me in the right direction.

If possible i would appreciate some pointers where i can continue troubleshooting and some insight to the error code we get in policy result.

Best Regards
Erik

Migrating Printer from Windows 2003 Standard 32 Bit to Windows 2008 Standard 32 bit are getting failed

Hello All,

Migrating Printer from Windows 2003 Standard 32 Bit to Windows 2008 Standard 32 bit are getting failed, tried through Printbrm and getting error "The following error occurred: 0x80070002.The system cannot find the file specified.". As we have multiple types of Printer like HP,DEll,Xerox,Canon and almost 600+ printers are configured on Print Server.

Also tried through exporting printers from Print management here also it gets stuck and error comes.

Hence need help any other tool is there to migrate this old printers as drivers include PS,PCL 5e,PS.

And as per the community multiple questions are there for upgrading the printers from 32 bit to 64 bit, but here we are migrating only 32 bit drivers only.

Help- Windows 2008 r2

Hi,

We had 200 users in the office. We had one print server (windows 2008r2) with 6 printers. Now we bought another office. We moved 150 users and 3 printers to the new office. We have setup new print server there and add 3 printers. Now users have these printers with old print server mapping. We don't want to change these mapping manually going clients each computer. We can do this with group policy but users from two offices will be transferring every week. For this reason GPO will be difficult for us. Do we make any registry change on new print server so that server accept the print request from the client with old office print server?

Please help to resolve this.

Thanks.

Turn off Printer acknoledgment

The problem we have is that when we select a printer, we have to wait approximately 20-30 seconds. It affects all the software that I use including Microsoft office products. It becomes more apparent when I use autocad 2014. I can have 20 drawings open at the same time and the way autocad works, I have to select the printer on each drawing. This adds up at the end of the day not to mention frustrating when you are in a hurry.

The server running the printer is in another facility in another state. So I am sure it is the lag from the network.

I read one article by someone who said that the system confirms that the printer is connected and online when making the printer selection. The printer I use is an office networked printer that I know works 99.99% of the time.Is there a way to turn off the confirmation of the printer so that the selection can be made instantly? I do not see this as a problem since the remaining .01% will alarm in the spooler.

Thanks in advance.

No Printers were found 80070BC4 - when Mapping / Defaulting printers from VBS script to a RDS Session

On Error Resume Next
Set WshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network")
PrinterPath = "\\server\Printer"
WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection PrinterPath
WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\server\Printer"

Without the "On error Resume Next"  I see the error listed above...

I followed the "no-printers-were-found-net-work-printer-error" TechNet Article.....

And at first, stopping the spooler -> deleting the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\"  Registry Key it worked... temporarily...

The script runs perfectly fine for my Win7 Client machines, but when running it on one of my RD Servers it fails with the above error.  At first it was only one server, now it is occurring on both servers.

I also have a GPO built to Map the Printers, and just want the default to be set by the VBS Script...

When I use a BAT script "rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /y /q /n "\\server\printer"

The default gets set everytime.... BUT my issue there is our Lotus Notes Application doesn't see the default printer...

If I run the VBS script... the default printer show's up under Lotus Notes when printing.

My End Goal:

Push Printers with GPO, set default using a VBS script (without errors)

(Using GPP to set default isn't an option for me, as I have many users that change their defaults multiple times a day for our applications, and can't have GPP forcing the change back..)

Any Ideas?
