Cannot change printer driver in print server / "Printer settings could not be saved. This operation is not supported."

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 64bit Print Server

In "Print Management" I right-click on my Brother MFC-8420DN printer and choose "Porperties".  Then under "Advanced" tab I used the "New Driver" button to install the latest 64bit driver for Windows 2012 R2 from brother.com (http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc8480dn_us&os=10002)

Adding the driver went fine without a hitch.  Now my new driver appears in the "Driver" list.  Currently it is using the driver "Brother Laser Leg Type1 Class Driver".

I change the driver to "Brother MFC-8480DN Printer."

Click "Apply".  Error window appears:

Printer settings could not be saved.
This operation is not supported.

GPO Printers in Black & White only?

$

I have successfully deployed a network printer through GPO and set the default to Black & White only, however users are able to override the default setting of Black & White to printer in color under "Preferences".

How can I stop the user from being able to change the default of Black & White to color in "Preferences"?

Under the security tab of that particular printer the "everyone" group has "Print" & "Read permissions".

Do I need to make a "deny" entry under the security tab so something?

Printing preferences from the print server don't synchronize in Windows 10 versions 1703, 1709, 1803

Wir have Windows Server 2016 with Printserver. Each printer is set as color and black/white. On the server side everything works correctly, but clients do not receive settings from the Server.

I have found many similar questions, but all of them are about earlier versions of Windows Server and Windows 10 and they didn't help anyway.

We have a isolated environment and front it with a dmz .

What is the secure way to achieve that

the machine where the print job is initiated in the the isolated network and the network printer is in the corp[orated network beyond the dmz

we do have a windows server in DMZ if that helps in configurting

Hi,

We have a network printer, i want to allow only specific AD group to use it. And i want to restrict all the other domain users and work group user. Will there be any possibilities of any non join computer with local admin rights can install that printer ?. And also i want to secure the printer data either by encrypting it or any other way and what other security settings can apply to make it more secure.

Thanks.

print server on Windows 2016 - slow printer mapping when printer is offline

$

Hello,

first let me say that my english is not very will, but I will do my best.

I need to migrate our old 2008 R2 print server (around 130 printer) to a new 2016 server. Migrating printer / drivers was not a big deal. The wizzard was able to install all drivers and printers. Mapping and printing over the new server worked as expected.

After some testing I realized that mapping a printer tooks some time (somthing around one minute) when the printer isoffline. If I turned the printer on again it just tooks some seconds to map them. The problem occours with hp upd 6.6 and 5.7.

The problem only occours if print server is windows server 2016 and clients are windows 2016 or windows 10.

The printer driver are preinstalled on the clients.

server 2016 -> windows 10 = slow

server 2016 -> server 2016 = slow

server 2008 R2 -> server 2016 = fast

server 2008 R2 -> windows 7 = fast

server 2008 R2 -> server 2008 R2 = fast

Someone got an idea?

Thanks a lot.

Hp printer will not show up in printerselectionscreen

The issue is following:

The Hp printer (LaserJet pro m501)  is in office for a long time now, and I just installed 2 new hp (elitbook 1040 g4) laptops one of them does everything correct. The other on the other hand doesn't show in printerselectionscreen. It does show up in computermanagement and in devices and printers. The profile which is used worked on a other system without issues so I don't think its the profile. As far as I can tell right now is the laptop the only one with issues when trying to print. When I try to add this printer a error will popup and say that the printer is not reachable, but on a other pc it works like a charm.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

With kind regards.

Unable to print pages from print queue's(Error- Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print troubleshooter for assistance? Unable to create a job).Restarting the print spooler service resolves this issue but comes back after few days.

Hello,

We have Windows 8.1/Windows 10 users who give print jobs via print queue. From few days, users are reporting that they were unable to give print jobs/test pages from all the print queue's that were sitting on one print server. Restarting the print spooler fixed the issue but the issue came back after few days. I'm trying to find the root cause and permanent fix for this issue as restarting the print spooler service is a temporary work around for this.

Below are my findings:

  • Print spooler service has no dependencies.
  • From the event logs i see Event ID 372 with the below description:  The document Microsoft Outlook - Daily Style, owned by XXXXX, failed to print on printer XXXXX. Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler. Data type: NT EMF 1.008. Size of the spool file in bytes: 813732. Number of bytes printed: 512624. Total number of pages in the document: 1. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: XXXX. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 122. The data area passed to a system call is too small.
  • I was'nt able to replicate the issue from my end as the users were able to print after the spooler service restart.
  • i tried to print few pages to see if it breaks.(As suggested https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/13c5aa49-5fe9-4b5f-95b9-672b22e9d6b9/win32-error-code-returned-by-the-print-processor-122-the-data-area-passed-to-a-system-call-is-too?forum=winserverprint)
  • The print server(WS2008 R2) and Client's machines are patched with latest updates.
  • We have same set of drivers on other print servers and we haven't came across this kind of issue on them.
  • I noticed that print jobs are failing initially on few Print queue's and after some time the failure is on all the print queue's that are sitting on the print server .

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

Printer GUID logged in Operational log

Client:

Windows 7 SP1 x64

Server:

Windows 2008 R2 SP1
Latest UPD drivers from HP, Xerox, Ricoh, etc.

Problem:

In the Microsoft-Windows-PrintService/Operational log, the printer's GUID instead of name is getting logged for events during GPP actions.  By actions, I mean when the printer is recreated (since the GPP setting is REPLACE).  Happens for all vendors.

Sample event (there are plenty more for other EventIDs too with ID 300, 304, 306, 302, 301)

Why isn't windows logging the real printer name? The GUID isn't useful at all.

Export Printers Default Settings - values wrong after import

$

Hey guys,

I'm trying to export the printer default settings from a Server 2008 (x86) to 2012 R2. The printer migration wizward had several problems with my Zebra label printers so I've wrote a script to create the printers on the new server (drivers pre installed). This works, but I've problems while transfering the printer default settings (in case of a label printer e.g. temperature and speed).

I'm exporting and importing the settings with:

# export
printui.exe /Ss /n"\\server-name\PRINTER" /a "C:\Printer.bin"
# import
printui.exe /Sr /n "PRINTER" /a "C:\Printer.bin" r p 2 c d g

The option g (global DEVmode) seems to be the right one, because it changes the default settings. But the values are wrong compared to the source printer.

The printer driver itself has a import/export function (with default settings dialog). If I export/import the settings from here, they are correct. But this is no option for > 100 printers.

So someone has an idea, whats going wrong?

Thanks and best regards

Andreas

Windows 10/Server 2012 R2 Printer GPO issues

$

A little background on this issue, my school district is moving to windows 10. We partially deployed Windows 10 LTSB to some of the labs in the district. We are seeing sporadic issues with our Group Policies deploying printers. We have below 50% success rate with printers actually installing on the Windows 10 client machines.

Thinking it was an issue with LTSB, we downloaded and installed Windows 10 Education version 1709 on a test VM and joined it to the domain. I then applied GPO’s from 4 different servers. 3 Physical Server 2012 R2 servers and the original problem Server 2012 R2 VM Server.

What I found was the same inconsistency after rebooting the Win 10 Edu Test VM. I am getting the same Event 513. See below:

(UNABLE TO POST IMAGE OF ERROR DUE TO ACCOUNT "NOT VERIFIED", PLEASE INFORM HOW TO VERIFY)

I am 100% sure the naming is right because I can manually add the same printer using the \\SERVER\FerLib path. All printers that fail to add have the Event 513. I am also going to post this on other forums.

We are only seeing this on student accounts which are domain guest accounts, meaning their profiles are non-permanent. We do not have the option to turn them into regular users per district policy. If you need more info that I omitted please let me know. We are getting desperate.

P.S We tried Group Policy preferences as well to deploy. No luck. Forcing GPUPDATE doesn't help.

Thanks!

Deploy printer using Local Group Policy (Windows 10 Pro Laptop)

$

I am trying to deploy a printer that is connected to my laptop via USB. I am trying to use local group policy to accomplish this. I have done the following in the admin account:

1) Connected the printer Cannon MG3500 to my laptop and installed the drivers.

2) Shared this printer on my home network which is of type Private.

3) I see the printer connected in my admin account.

Now my laptop has three non-admin users; Test, Test1 and Test2. I want to deploy this printer only to Test and Test1 users. Test2 should not be able to install the printer drivers and use them.

Now, while logged in as admin, I open group policy editor and make sure that the following setting are enabled:

1) local computer GPO admin-templete>System>Driver Installation - Set to allow non-admin user to install printer drivers

2) Local computer GPO admin-templete?Printers>Point and Print Restrictions - Enabled. I specified the print server's name (my local laptop \\Prashant) and set the security prompts to Do not show warning or elevation prompt

3) Local computer GPO admin-templete>Printers>Package Point and Printe> Enabled. I specified the print server's name (my local laptop \\Prashant)

I verified that network discovery and file and printer sharing is turned on for private network.

Now I can deploy the printer for the whole computer in the GPO local computer policy and the printer gets deployed, no problem.

When I try to go deploy the printer in the GPO Local Computer\Test Policy (Test user policy) it always shows the printer status pending, I don't know why.

So does this mean that I can deploy the printer, I have to deploy it for the whole computer and cannot do it for specific users? (non-admin)

Also I tried deploying the printer using print management, right-click on the printer and select deploy with group policy. This did not work as well.

I am trying to do this on a laptop that is running Windows 10 Pro and is not connected to a DC.

Can someone please help me with my dilemma ?

Thank you

AppCrash PrintIsolationHost Xerox Printers on Remote Desktop Server 2012R2

Hi Guys,

After replacing some Xerox printers we are struggling with crashing PrinsIsolationHost.exe processes.
Some information about drivers/hardware, we are using Xerox GPD PS V5.6.17.7.0 ( PostScriptsDriver ) driver.
This driver are we using for 5 printers, the model of these devices are "Xerox AltaLink C8055"

We have also en separated Windows 2012 R2 Print server.  These problems will show up after opening Outlook and requesting for a print preview. After some seconds Outlook and Print Spooler/PrintIsolationhost are no longer responding.

Bellow you can find one of those dump files after the crash. Every day we have on each Remote Desktop server 10 or 15 Report.WER files about this problem.

I hope that someone has an idea or solution. Thanks in advance

How do i setup Branch Office Printing?  Do I need two IPs assigned to the printer and setup a printer pool?  If so what is the second IP for?  I have enabled Branch office printing on a printer but when the network cable (my print server is a VM, I am testing this feature) is pulled from the printer I am not able to print

Server 2016 - Setup IPP print queue

$

Hi,

Hoping someone can help, this is driving me nuts!

Server 2016, Print Management installed with Internet Printing enabled. Trying to add an IPPS print queue by going to:

Control panel
Devices and Printers
The Printer I want isn't Listed
Select a shared printer by name

Then adding: https://DNS_Address_of_Printer.domain.local/IPPS

Resulting action is an immediate and generic error of: Windows couldn't connect to the printer. Check the printer name.......

The DNS address of the printer resolves correctly. The SSL cert for the the printer is in the correct store on the server, when browsing via https to the printer webpage there is no warning.

Connecting to the same printer, from a Windows 10 PC on the same subnet as the 2016 server, using the same steps as above, works perfectly!

Any thoughts very much welcomed!

Adam

Hi There,

I have a seriuos and funny issue, with our Canon printers.

We have Canon IR ADV 3225n and Canon IR ADV C2020i. Few weeks ago, we started to use MS Windows server 2008, and shared printers from the servers.

The Bussines requirement is to use Department and PIN code printing on the printers, and my issue has started here.

On each workstations/laptops this features is not working with the following error message: Could not get device information.

But, on the server it is working without any problems, and when I install them via IP address also working and nobody knows why.

Everybody has Admin rights on their devices, I've tried with the latest driver x86 and X64 without success.

Do you have any experience about it?

Thanks in advance.

I am able to connect to the printer send print jobs and the printer does not print and says error on print management 2008 server r2. I  can pause it and do everything in the network side. What has to be done in order to restart the particular spoiler or is it something else? I have several printers that are working expect one. This one is the only one that won't print.

Set default printer by port or by wildcard name

I need to set default printer on a large number of computers and need a simple command line that can be ran on all of them to do it.  The only similarities between the printers is they all use the same port and there is a common word in the name.

This is what I've tried and neither have worked:

RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /y /n "*NAME*"

RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /y /n "%NAME%"

RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /y /r "PORT"

Cscript %WINDIR%\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\Prnmngr.vbs -t -r "PORT"

Cscript %WINDIR%\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\Prnmngr.vbs -t -p "*NAME*"

Cscript %WINDIR%\System32\Printing_Admin_Scripts\en-US\Prnmngr.vbs -t -p "*NAME*"

Any help would be appreciated.

Printers - different offices

Hi all,

We have different office locations and we map printers based on the IP range of each location.

This works fine up to now. The main problem is that each location has a couple of printers and, based on the floor of each department, I´d like to set a default printer.

Is this possible, as we just managed to map the whole IP-range printers and set a default printer for all the specific location.

Thanks in advance,

Eduardo
