forcing network printer paper sizes to propagate to clients

$

I have a Server 2008 R2 print server which all the client workstations print through to networked printers. We have a Canon iPF8300S color plotter using the Canon driver. The problem I'm encountering is that I can't get the custom paper sizes I've created to propagate to the workstations' instances of this printer. This is a problem I've encountered in the past with other printers, but I've usually been able to get it to update by un-sharing and re-sharing the printer. This time nothing I try works

I've found a registry entry on the print server that governs the paper sizes, and it includes all of the custom ones, but because these are network shared printers, there's no corresponding entry on the workstation at HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers where it would go. I do not want to set up local printer instances for all the workstations, and I really don't want to have to manually create custom paper sizes on all of them. There has to be a way to force these settings to propagate, but I can't seem to find anything that works.

These printers are all publish through Group Policy Preferences, set to "Replace". Not sure if that makes a difference, but my understanding is that option would delete and recreate the printer instance at logon. That is probably happening but it's still not updating the paper size settings.

Windows Server 2012 shows print job title in queue even for non admins

We have a Server 2012 print server that is also running PaperCut.  Everyone in the company is able to see the job title in the print queues.  I have checked to make sure that everyone is not set as an admin on the server or the queues.  I thought by default this was supposed to be changed in 2012 to display Print Document if you do not own the print job.  I know PaperCut aslo has a feature to hide the print job title, but it hides it from everyone even admins.  Any help would be appreciated.

GPO Printers in Black & White only?

$

I have successfully deployed a network printer through GPO and set the default to Black & White only, however users are able to override the default setting of Black & White to printer in color under "Preferences".

How can I stop the user from being able to change the default of Black & White to color in "Preferences"?

Under the security tab of that particular printer the "everyone" group has "Print" & "Read permissions".

Do I need to make a "deny" entry under the security tab so something?

Slow printing, why is this?!

Hello!

I got a really delicate problem that I'm unable to figure out. And I would like some input from Reddit before I take the big step of opening a case at Microsoft.

I'm working as a consultant in the SMB-segment of IT. With that I have daily fights with regular PCs, virtual enviorments, networking and of course: Printers.

A couple of months ago we deployed a new printserver (Windows Server 2012), dedicated to a printing software for labels (Nicelabel). This printserver takes care of about 30 labelprinters, all from the same brand (Datamax-O'Neil MP Nova4). In the beginning of the deployment everything went stunning! Printing a label would'nt take less than 2-3 seconds and everybody was happy!

But since a couple of weeks back, we've seen horrible performance of the printing. Printing a label takes 10 seconds now days (exactly 10 seconds) on all the printers on that server. The label that's about to get printed (weather it's generated from the printing software, or simply a test page in Windows) gets stuck in the Printspool, and let's go after 10 seconds.

I've tried to disable bidirectional support, disabled "Advanced Printing Features" and changing the VLAN (so the printserver is on the same VLAN as the printers). Still the same problem. We are using the recommended driver from DATAMAX themself (according to them, there is no problem with the driver at all).

The printers has been deployed on the server with two simple Powershell-commands (see below):

add-printerport -name "$portname" -printerhostaddress "$portip"
add-printer -name "$printername" -drivername "$driver" -port "$portname".

If I add another printer, let's say a HP 2055dn with Universal Print Driver, the printing process is working like a charm.

So, printer gurus at TechNet. What would you do?

Best regards, sad-consultant-who-deals-with-printers

Windows Fax & Scan to Modem Connection Problems

Windows Fax & Scan is unable to dial the internal modem.

This problem had been solved. A recent in-place windows restore broke it. I can’t find what I did to fix it previously.

Symptoms:

When trying to send a fax from Windows Fax & Scan, the connection sound is a very nasty buzzing sound. This is what it sounds like:https://1drv.ms/u/s!Ag3kMlvkg9qhjE-Ku4gNimIuSr1N

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

1. Updated the modem driver from

Agere System PCI-SV92PP Soft Modem

to

LSI PCI-SV92PP Soft Modem 2.2.98.0

2. Ran Device Manager > Modem Diagnostics > Query Modem.

Windows Server 2016

This is the relevant section of setupapi.dev when I try to add a new driver. This doesn't appear to be a driver corruption issue, as I am unable to add the printer using a generic driver that is already installed to the server, and being used on other printers.

In addition to this, after testing I am unable to add printers from the Print server to other machines in the domain, including our RDS farm. The error given is "Operation failed with error 0x0000057"

Erratic print queue deployment / display - Server 2008 R2

$

Hi all,

I hope some of you experts might be able to offer some useful advice, for a non expert like myself.

I'm facing an issue where a customer has 7 identical new Konica Minolta MFD printers, Which have replaced the earlier generation kit. They are shared from a 2008 R2 print server via GPO and run a terminal server which is randomly dropping print queues for 6 of the 7 devices, in no particular order.

So far we've updated the drivers to the latest and all firmware on the printers is up to date. They've tried to manually map the print queues (\\RDSPRINT\PRINTER1 etc.) instead of using group policy, but yet again the queues either do not all show up or randomly disappear. If you try to manually add one that has dropped off, or not appeared on start-up you can receive the message that the printer already exists, but it does not display so cannot be used.

They have tried deleting the printers, but it feels like something might be getting left behind. Any advice on the most reliable method of removal of all trace of the print queues might help.

Or could this be a Server 2008 R2 known issue that perhaps will not get solved due to end of life in Jan next year?

Please forgive any mistakes I may have made in my description, our customer is simply too busy to look into it any further at this point, so I'm trying to be proactive and possibly get some answers/pointers to assist.

Thanks in advance for your time.

I'm trying to install our printer driver to 2008 R2 as uni-directional. The process we recomend is to 1st install the printer as a normal USB bi-directional printer. Then after install, go to printer properties and click the Advanced tab and click on "New Driver" button. The problem is the New driver button greyed out. I'm logged in with administrator rights.

Windows printer server - Drivers installed but not showing up when trying install printer

Hello everyone

I have a Windows 2012 R2 print server, and i have an issue with some drivers.

When i open the Print management, and check the drivers in the list of my server, they are all installed, but when i try to install a printer, when i have to select the existing driver, some of then are not showing up.

This issue occurs for different drivers from different constructor (HP, Ricoh, Lexmark...)

Does anyone have any idea why they are not showing up even if they are present in the drivers list ?

Thanks

Hi

We have new printer server have some printers share to everyone, but when domain user connect to printer, it will prompts out below similar window.  user can not get drive installed if have no local computer admin rights.

I searched many forms. one solution is

  • Create a new GPO
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration, Policies, Administrative Templates, Printers, Point and Print Restrictions and set it to Enabled.

Then change the following settings:

  • Users can only point and print to these servers > Unticked (Disabled)
  • Users can only point and print to machines in their forest > Enabled
  • When installing drivers for a new connection > Do not show warning or elevation prompt
  • When updating drivers for an existing connection > Do not show warning or elevation prompt

I tested this solution on local computer policy, it is sure work.

but, I compare with our other Domains in the same forest, all other domains keep this "Point and Print Restrictions" by default(Disabled).

I would like to know any other solution allow user connect share printer no restricting.

Thank you.

sending Print command to printer fails with unable to initialize device

$

I have someone who is trying to send a Print command in an elevated command prompt window to a  printer that is defined and shared on a 2008 R2 print server on a 2008R2 Domain. The printer works otherwise for word/excel documents.

the command is Print /D:\\server\printershare drive:\filename

message is: Unable to initialize device on \\server\printershare.

The printers are not deployed via group policy.  Exception granted via firewall exeption for the print.exe in windows\system32 which appears first in path statement.

Would the client be using the sysWOW64 version of print.exe?

http://www.block.net.au/blogs/james/archive/2009/03/09/windows-server-2008-print-exe-problems-unable-to-initialize-device.aspx

If I have another domain that was upgraded from 2003, and print works in that domain, besides firewalling, would the SMB come into play?

Export Printers Default Settings - values wrong after import

$

Hey guys,

I'm trying to export the printer default settings from a Server 2008 (x86) to 2012 R2. The printer migration wizward had several problems with my Zebra label printers so I've wrote a script to create the printers on the new server (drivers pre installed). This works, but I've problems while transfering the printer default settings (in case of a label printer e.g. temperature and speed).

I'm exporting and importing the settings with:

# export
printui.exe /Ss /n"\\server-name\PRINTER" /a "C:\Printer.bin"
# import
printui.exe /Sr /n "PRINTER" /a "C:\Printer.bin" r p 2 c d g

The option g (global DEVmode) seems to be the right one, because it changes the default settings. But the values are wrong compared to the source printer.

The printer driver itself has a import/export function (with default settings dialog). If I export/import the settings from here, they are correct. But this is no option for > 100 printers.

So someone has an idea, whats going wrong?

Thanks and best regards

Andreas

What does Print and Document Services role do?

I setup a Windows Server 2016 print server last summer and have been using it in my Active directory environment.  I just noticed that the "Print and Document Services" role is not installed.

I've looked online and haven't been able to find an article to tell me actually what it does.  What am I missing if anything?  All the printers are in the directory and their all working.  Why should I install it?

Push default printer settings from server - setprinter.exe ?

$

Hi,

I need to push out some new default printer settings (mono and duplex) for 300 printers across about 12 x 2003/2008 print servers.  All of these devices are already mapped by around 2500 WinXP/7 users, so reconnecting the devices for everybody is not an option, nor is redeploying via GPO.  I've read the following thread, which appears to explain what I need to do:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverprint/thread/a0a9bb3f-db24-417d-9905-c310d068d3c6/

Firstly, I need the latest version of setprinter.exe, as the one I've got is date stamped April 2003, which I assume is the one that fails to work with devmode 9.  Does anybody know where I can get this from?

Secondly, I think it says that the clients will periodically update themselves with the server's default settings.  This is perfect, if correct.  However, would anybody please be able to explain when these periodic updates take place?

Many thanks in advance !

Andy

Hi,

We have print server on Windows 2008 R2.

Everything works fine until yesterday. Just of a sudden, multiple users were having issue to print. if you put the cursor on the printer, it will say "Needs new driver", but if I try to install the printer by opening \\PrintServer and double click the printer, I got error below.

but if I Install the printer by creating a TCP/IP port locally, then it works.

My question is what caused the problem? Why only part of users are affected and others are fine? How to fix the issue?

Need help!

Thanks in advance!

Grace
