Powershell and IPP printers

Hello,

has anyone already managed to install an IPP printer with powershell?

The "old" way with:

rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /b "3rd Floor" /if /f "hpc4x50c.inf" /x /n "whatever" /r "http://printserver.domain.edu:631/printers/3rdFloor" /m "HP LaserJet 4250 PCL 6" /h "x86" /v "Windows XP"

takes too long, and is not stable across reboots.

Preferred Windows Version : 10+

Many thanks.

Hi,

I contacted HP for a Officejet 6700 printer driver suitable for Winders Server 2008 R2 X64 and they said that Microsoft supply them so my question is where can I down load them from?

Backup My Print Server

Hello,

I have three print servers that I want to backup on a weekly basis using the printbrm utility.  Two of the servers I can backup and restore successfully.  When I backup the third server, it completes successfully, but when I restore it I get "Windows could not read printer data from the import file".  The drivers folder is 2.4 GB, and I cannot remove anymore drivers.  There are about 30 printers shared on this server.  Is there another utility or any other way to backup this server?

Big EMF file vs small RAW with W10

Hello,

I have issue with a windows 2012 R2 print server and W10 (10.0.17134) computer.

Some W10 computer generate very big job in the server queue. All of them print in the same queue :  \\SRV01\73S-VIR-000

Queue config :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sending a DOCX and a print test page with PC1 (W10 ver. 10.0.17134):

Docx 5 page : 27Mo / Print test page : 6Mo

The data type are NT EMF 1.008.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sending a DOCX and a print test page with PC2 (W10 ver. 10.0.17134):

Same Docx 5 page : 500Ko / Print test page : 28Ko

The data type are RAW, all features are available.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

On the W2012 R2 print server :

Print test page : 6Mo (NT EMF 1.008)

If I uncheck the "Enable advanced printing features" all computers print in RAW type but I lose some features.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

So the question is : How reduce size of the EMF data or print in RAW with all features.

Thanks for your help.

Print Export/Import issue - changed port settings

$

We are in the process of updating our windows 2008 print servers to windows 2012 r2.. the print export/ import process found online worked for the first server, but the second server, the import appeared to work. It shows all the printers (44 total), and test print worked, etc.

Come Monday morning, we find some desktops weren't printing and it was asking for a file path to print to.. for some reason the port created on the import process was 'File' and not the usual HST_printername port (TCP/IP).. about five of the 44 printers had this happen.

Going forward is there a way to prevent this from happening?

We have print servers that have 300+ print queues and I don't want to have to manually check everyone if it can be avoided...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

PrintUI autodetect

When adding a printer via the GUI (2012 R2), there is an option to add a printer using auto-detect and an IP address:

"Add a printer" --> "The printer that I want isn't listed" --> "Add a local or network printer as an administrator" --> "The printer that I want isn't listed" --> "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" -->

Primary question:  What command line options do I need to add to printui.exe to mimic this GUI behavior?

Additional questions:

  • What information is pulled back from the printer during auto-detect?
  • How can we see that information?
  • Can C# tap into this information?
  • Can C# invoke this auto-detect process?
  • What is the communication protocol used for this auto-detect functionality?

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

2012R2 Print Server Extremely Slow Driver Installation to CLients

Hello all,
I have a domain with both 2003 and 2012r2 domain controllers and a file/print 2012r2 server.
I will demote the 2003 DCs in a week.
It takes very long time (>5 minutes) to install new printers to windows 7 clients (hangs on “searching driver” and “downloading driver”.
When i use the command “netstat” on client I can’t find established connection (ipv4) with print server.
When i use the command “netstat” on client and I access print server file share, I find established connection (ipv4) with server (OK).

I have the same delay when using Active Directory (Devices and Printers > Add a Printer > Add a network printer) to install the driver as when double-clicking the printer share from the server (\\servername\printer-name).
After installation, when clients are printing the response time is normal.
I disable firewall on server and on client, but no luck.
I disable ipv6 on server, but no luck (I re-enable it).
Nslookup from client to server and vice versa has normal results.
SMB in particular server is working ok without delay.
I have installed universal drivers from HP, Ricoh and Lexmark on print server.

Thanks,
Alex

Server 2016 Print Server CNAME

Has anyone seen this problem for Server 2016?

I've attempted to add a CNAME for our Print server as it's also a DC (not ideal but needs must) and I get an error on connection.

It seems there is a hotfix for 2012 but none that I can find for 2016.

(CNAME for the print server in a Windows Server 2012 R2 DNS brings up plenty of entries).

Thanks in advance.

Print jobs blocking the print server

Hello All,

I am faced with a strange problem with print jobs blocking the print server.
There is a dedicated Windows Server 2012 R2 print server with about 20 printers installed which serves 200 users. For several years, the server worked without failures. Printers driver are updated regularly.

Last year, we started migrating client’s PC from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and from that moment on, problems started occurring. The print job hangs with the status “Printing” and block all subsequent tasks. You cannot delete it from the queue, you need to restart the print service.

The following analysis of the problem shows that:

-  The problem occurs on three Canon color printers only (drivers PCL6 v.21.85 and UFRII v.30, models iR-ADV C7260, iPR C700 and iR-ADV C5235)

- The problem occurs only for clients with Windows 10 installed that print from native Win10 applications, most often PDF files opened in MS Edge and images opened in Photo App.

- The problem occurs in one case out of ten

-  Datatype of the blocked print job is specified as XPS2GDI (usually RAW)

What was done:

- tried to reinstall the driver

- changed port parameters from RAW to LPR

did not help.

I tried the “Print directly to the printer” option - it's very strange but after a while setup switch back to  (Spool print documents)

I don’t know where to look anymore. I’ll appreciate any help possible.

Thank you in advance

Issue with printer separator file pcl.sep and printer installation

$

We have a Kyocera CS 5551 ci printer that is shared on a server.  The shared printer is also configured to use the standard pcl.sep separator file and it has always worked.  About 4 or 5 months ago if not earlier (possibly before my time in this environment) the printer no longer gets installed on client computers when group policy is applied because the separator file is considered to be invalid.

Below are the details:

pcl.sep file contains the following, and it is on a Server 2016 system where the shared printer resides.

\
\H1B\L%-12345X@PJL ENTER LANGUAGE=PCL
\H1B\L&l1T\0
\M\B\S\N\U
\U\LJob : \I
\U\LDate: \D
\U\LTime: \T
\E

When group policy runs, the printer should get installed on Win 7 Pro x64 clients.

However, it fails to install the printer and the following error in the Application log shows up:

Source: Group Policy Printers

Event ID: 8192

Level: Error

User: SYSTEM
Task Category: (2)

The user 'xxx.xxx.xx.xxx' preference item in the Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070707 The specified separator file is invalid.' See trace file for more details.

I am not sure why it is considering the file to be invalid.  Replacing the file has made no difference.

Any help is highly appreciated, because everything that I have tried has been without success.  Thanks.

Print queue just stopping.

Hello,

We're running the following system :

Celeron J1900/4GB ram/64GB SSD and Windows 7 Pro 64Bit.

The system has a Static IP (192.168.159.5) and the printer are POS printers (Thermal printers from Sewoo).

Printers are all set to static IP's 192.168.159.51.

What happens is this : At some random moment the print queue halts for a random printer.
When i click 'restart' on the printjob that's stuck it just goes on like nothing happened.
And it happens at least once every evening.

We have no clue what is causing this issue, also this issue only occurs at that location.

We have 2 network printers that are installed on Server 2019. We added them using add local printer to a standard tcp/ip port and shared them. When trying to connect to these printers from a workstation through a share by going to \\servername\printer we get error 0x00000709.  I tried the steps in this article which didn't resolve the issue. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/error-0x00000709-try-connect-printer-windows-10

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

Unable to print via wireless connection unless NordVPN is on

$

Ok so I downloaded NordVPN on my HP laptop a while back. Well I bought a new wireless printer but for whatever reason my laptop wouldn't print anything. My girlfriends and daughters laptop prints without issues. Well after messing around with it for a while I noticed that the connection showed the printer was offline and I couldn't get my laptop to register it as online so I can use it. Again the other computers in the house worked flawlessly. Well I opened up NordVPN one day and I had a pop-up on my computer say the printer was online. I attempted to print something and was successful. But as soon as I disconnect off of the VPN servise it goes back to offline and will not print. I tested it out multiple times by starting up the VPN and each time it would print whatever I needed. But would always stop as soon as the VPN was closed and not being used. I re-downloaded all the software with no luck. I did what I could to adjust the settings with no luck. Well my subscription expired and I deleted NordVPN. I was able to print off one page but then that was it and now it will not print at all again. I am able to scan documents with the printer and it shows up on my computer, so I know its connected and recognizes it, but it just wont work. The laptop is an HP running windows 10 and the printer is a HP envy 5055. Any help would be appreciated.

Shared PDF Printer not working from remote client

$

Hello

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Print Server role installed.

There is a static PDF Printer (PDF Creator or any other Software) which print to a predefined folder (D:\PDF\).
It works fine when I print anything to it from the Server locally -> file is created at D:\PDF\Test Page.pdf

I shared this printer -> \\Server\PDFPrinter

When I connect this Printer to a Client the Driver is installed and the printer added wihtoput any problems.
Printing to this shared printer does not result in an error the print job even gets listed as "printed" on the servers spooler.
But the file in D:\PDF\xy.pdf is not created.

Security in the folder is set to everyone full control for testing perposes.

It does not matter which pdf software i install its the same with every product -> fine locally, no file created remotely.

Does anyone have an idea where what's the problem and how to solve it?
I hope I did not miss any important information, if so please let me know I'll provide it :)

Thank you very much in advance.

Regards
Christoph
